ARTIST STATEMENT
The beauty and variety of the natural world has always been my source of inspiration, and I have cultivated a deep curiosity and reverence for the environment. My practice is rooted in close observation, but I translate what I see through intuition rather than realism. I paint from memory-- of a place, a moment, or a reimagined blend of experiences.
My paintings evolve over time as I layer pigments, lines, shapes, and materials. Working in my studio, I use meditation, music, and improvisation to stir my creativity. I create texture through visible brush strokes, scratching back into paint, or adding other materials to the canvas such as white tissue paper or modeling paste. My paintings slowly unfold through the process of adding, subtracting and combining colors and textures, as I allow for the emergence of subtle transformations and shifts of tone, color, and structure.
When I feel a "wow" connection with something I see or experience, often in nature, I feel compelled to translate it into paint. I love experimenting with color combinations and building texture, so the finished composition radiates a positive, organic energy. I think of my paintings as visual poems, condensing experience into a resonant moment. Through my work, I aim to create moments of transcendence--for myself and for others--drawing viewers in and inviting an emotional response.
BIOGRAPHY
Artist Connie Newton Stancell's was born in Vermont and currently works from her studio in Connecticut. Stancell's artwork is deeply rooted in observation of the natural world. Her inspiration comes from a variety of sources including her travels across the globe, the rural New England dairy farm on which she was raised, and the extensive rock garden she cultivates in coastal Connecticut. Stancell brings a blend of curiosity, insight, and humility into the work she creates.
She earned her BA at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (Amherst, MA) and has pursued additional study at The Corcoran School of Art (Washington, DC), The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA) and Spruill Center for the Arts (Dunwoody, GA). She is an active member of The National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) since 2010.
Stancell's paintings have been exhibited at dozen of venues across the Northeastern United States, including New Britain Museum of American Art (New Britain, CT), GE Cultural Art Gallery. (Fairfield, CT), Silvermine Art Gallery (New Canaan, CT), Flinn Gallery (Greenwich, CT), Bendheim Gallery (Greenwich, CT), University of Connecticut Stamford Art Gallery (Stamford, CT), Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY), College of New Rochelle (New Rochelle,NY), Salmagundi Club (New York, NY), National Arts Club (New York, NY), Fairleigh Dickinson University (Hackensack NJ), Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art (Marietta, GA), Morris Brown College (Atlanta, GA), and the Governor's Office Gallery (Atlanta, GA).
Her work has been collected by The Copelouzos Family Art Museum (Athens, Greece), The Trumbower Financial Advisors Collection (Bethesda, MD), The Grady Memorial Hospital Collection (Atlanta, GA) and many private collections. Stancell was featured in three issues of Studio Visit Magazine (2012, 2015, 2025), and in articles in The Greenwich Times and Greenwich Post newspapers.
